The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault
The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault Albeit a lot lesser known than his artistic beneficiaries the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, seventeenth century French essayist, Charles Perrault, not just set the fantasy as a scholarly type however composed about the entirety of the class most mark stories, including Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, Puss in Boots, Tom Thumb, and the bigger assignment of Mother Goose stories. Perrault distributed his Stories or Tales from Times Past (captioned Mother Goose Tales) in 1697 and showed up toward the finish of a long and not so much fulfilling scholarly life. Perrault was about 70 years of age and, while he was very much associated, his commitments had been more scholarly than masterful. In any case, this thin volume contained three of his previous refrain stories and eight new exposition stories made a progress that hadnt appeared to be conceivable to the man whod since quite a while ago made his principle living as a common servant.â Effect on Literatureâ Some of Perraults stories were adjusted from oral custom, some were roused by scenes from before works, (counting Boccaccios The Decameron and Apuleius The Golden Ass), and some were developments entirely new to Perrault. What was most altogether new was transforming otherworldly people stories into refined and unpretentious types of composed writing. While we presently consider fantasies as essentially childrens writing, there was nothing of the sort as childrens writing in Perraults time. In view of this, we can see that the ethics of these stories take on progressively common purposes, regardless of their guilefully cunning bundling inside the fantastical universe of pixies, monsters, and talking creatures. While Perraults unique stories are not really the forms that were taken care of to us as kids, they likewise cant be required to be the women's activist and communist exchange forms that we may want them to be (see Angela Carters 1979 story assortment, The Bloody Chamber, for this sort of present day curve; Carter had deciphered a release of Perraults fantasies in 1977 and was motivated to make her own adaptations as a reaction). Perrault was a high society scholarly during the rule of the Sun King. Not at all like the tale author Jean de La Fontaine, whose rich accounts regularly censured the incredible and took the side of the dark horse (in actuality he himself was not in favor with the megalomaniacal Louis XIV), Perrault didnt have quite a bit of an enthusiasm for causing trouble. Rather, as a main figure on the cutting edge side of the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns, he carried new structures and sources to writing to make something that even the people of yore had never observed. La Fontaine was on the people of old and composed tales in the vein of Aesop, and keeping in mind that La Fontaine was considerably more melodiously refined and mentally smart, it was Perraults innovation that establish the framework for another sort of writing that is made a culture all its own. Perrault may have been composing for grown-ups, yet the fantasies that he originally put in writing produced an insurgency in what sorts of stories could be made into writing. Before long, composing for youngsters spread all through Europe and in the long run over the remainder of the world. The outcomes and even his own works may have gone out of sight Perraults plan or control, however that is the thing that regularly happens when you bring something new into the world. It appears that theres an ethical some place in that. References in Other Worksâ Perraults stories entered culture in manners that far rise above his very own masterful reach. They penetrated for all intents and purposes each degree of present day workmanship and diversion from rock tunes to well known movies to the most refined stories by artistic sensationalists, for example, Angela Carter and Margaret Atwood. With every one of these stories framing a typical social money, the lucidity and plan of the firsts have frequently been either clouded or bended to serve here and there faulty implications. And keeping in mind that a film like 1996s Freeway makes a splendid and important curve on the Little Red Riding Hood story, a lot progressively well known adaptations of Perraults works (from the saccharine Disney movies to the peculiarly offending Pretty Woman) control their crowds by advancing traditionalist sexual orientation and class generalizations. A lot of this is in the firsts, however, and its frequently amazing to see exactly what is and what isnt in the first forms of these fundamental fantasies. Stories by Perrault In Puss in Boots, the most youthful of three children acquires just a feline when his dad bites the dust, however through the felines wily conspiring the youngster winds up affluent and wedded to a princess. Perrault, who was in favor with Louis XIV, gives two interconnected butâ competingâ morals to theâ tale, and he obviously had the plots of the court at the top of the priority list with this clever parody. From one viewpoint, the story advances utilizing difficult work and resourcefulness to excel, instead of simply depending on your folks cash. Be that as it may, then again, the story cautions against being taken in by fakers who may have accomplished their riches in deceitful manners. In this manner, a story that appears as though an instructional childrens tale really fills in as a twofold edged send-up of class portability as it existed in the seventeenth century. Perraults Little Red Riding Hood peruses a lot of like the promoted renditions that we as a whole grew up with, however with one major distinction: the wolf eats the young lady and her grandma, and no one goes along to spare them. Without the glad closure that the Brothers Grimm flexibly in their variant, the story fills in as a notice to young ladies against conversing with outsiders, particularly against enchanting wolves who appear to be humanized however are maybe much increasingly hazardous. Theres no gallant male to kill the wolf and spare Little Red Riding Hood from her own guileless honesty. Theres just threat, and its up to young ladies to figure out how to remember it. Like Puss in Boots, Perraults Cinderella additionally has two contending and conflicting ethics, and they in like manner examine inquiries of marriageability and class association. One good cases that appeal is a higher priority than looks with regards to winning a keeps an eye on heart, a thought that proposes that anybody can accomplish satisfaction, paying little heed to their regular resources. However, the subsequent good pronounces that regardless of what characteristic endowments you have, you need an adoptive parent or back up parent so as to effectively utilize them. This message recognizes, and maybe bolsters, societys significantly lopsided playing field. The most odd and astounding of Perraults stories, Donkey Skin, is additionally one of his least known, presumably in light of the fact that its stunning grotesqueries have no chance to get of being watered down and made effectively satisfactory. In the story, a perishing sovereign requests that her significant other remarry after her passing, yet just to a princess much more delightful than her. In the end, the rulers own girl develops to outperform her dead moms excellence, and the lord falls profoundly infatuated with her. At the recommendation of her pixie guardian, the princess sets apparently unthinkable expectations of the ruler in return for her hand, and the lord by one way or another satisfies her requests each an ideal opportunity to both sparkling and alarming impact. At that point she requests the skin of the rulers enchantment jackass, which poos gold coins and is the wellspring of the realms riches. Indeed, even this the lord does, thus the princess escapes, wearing the jackass skin as a perpetual mask. In Cinderella-like design, a youthful ruler protects her from her foulness and weds her, and occasions come to pass so her dad additionally winds up cheerfully matched with a neighboring widow-sovereign. Notwithstanding the cleanliness of every one of its closures, this is the story that contains the messiest and most stunning of Perraults developed universes. Maybe that is the reason family has been not able to tame it into a rendition that feels good introducing to youngsters. There is no Disney form, however for the daring, Jacques Demys 1970 film featuring Catherine Deneuve figures out how to catch the entirety of the storys perversity while throwing the loveliest and most otherworldly spell on its watchers.

How Many Summer Program Applications Are Too Many TKG
How Many Summer Program Applications Are Too Many As is often our prerogative at TKG, weâre going to be real with you; this is not the smartest question and if youâre asking it, youâre probably already in trouble. Consider that asking, âhow many summer program applications are too many?â is the same asking âhow many college applications are too many?â Youâre missing the point. When applying to summer programs (and college for that matter), itâs all about quality, not quantity.Donât apply to 15 programs to ensure your acceptance. You would actually be better off applying to two summer programs that youâve researched, at which youâve reached out to the people running it so youâre connected, and are prepared to make a really strong case for why youâd be a great fit. The bottom line is, you should want to go to the summer programs to which you are applying and the odds are, you arenât dying to attend all 15. The other pitfall of applying to too many summer programs is that students end up spreading themse lves too thin. Itâs really difficult to write 15 knockout applications. In fact, what usually happens when kids overdo it on the application pool is that they tend to write 15 BS applications. Weâd rather you write two perfect ones. This Is Not a Job Search Often times, we see parents advise their kids to cast a wide net. Hereâs the thing, parents, your kid isnât 40 and this is not a job search. When youâve been laid off and have a family to feed, 200 job applications arenât always enough. In the world of summer programs, 10 is too many. Yes, college has, indeed, changed since your day. It has gotten more competitive, but you canât just approach this like youâd approach something in your own life. Your kids are not you. They are teenagers.Whittle It Down, Down, Down Now that weâve established where youâre not going to apply, itâs time to discuss where you are going to apply. Pick your primary area of interest and get even more specific. Letâs say youâre generally interested in political science. We had a kid who loved politics, but didnât know exactly which area of political science he was into. We had him really think for a few days about what exactly attracted him to the area of politics. It turns out, he was really interested in all of the factors around implementing new legislation. In other words, he was interested in policy. We asked him a few more questions. Did he want to learn how to write policy? Was he interested in working for some of the top policy-makers in the country? At the end of the day, he wanted to do extensive policy research. When you really get into the weeds, there shouldnât be more than five or ten options for summer programs that really fit the bill. If youâre still on 15, you havenât done enough whittling. The ExceptionThe caveat to everything weâve said above is if you want to do research with a professor. If you do, you should plan to email every professor in that given field at every univers ity possible. This might end up taking 100 emails. Otherwise, donât apply to more than five.Need help nailing down the perfect summer program? Give us a call. Weâve helped our students secure their spots at some of the most prestigious programs in the country.

The World s Fair An Attempt By The United States Government
Introduction In 1904, millions of people visited the Philippine Exhibit at the St. Louis Worldââ¬â¢s Fair, observing the displays of native Filipinos and leaving with an impression of savagery. However, this impression was hardly incidental. To what extent was the 1904 Worldââ¬â¢s Fair an attempt by the United States government to justify its imperialist involvement in the Philippines? This fair was carefully engineered by the United States government to impart an uncivilized impression of Filipinos onto American fairgoers, thereby justifying the need for US involvement. This commission was a committee ordained by the US government to govern the newly acquired Philippine islands. This portion of the fair would likely not be present if the Unitedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦By depicting the Filipinos as savages, the Commission hoped to prove that the Filipinos were no longer resisting American control and that the US government would benevolently assimilate and civilize the Filipinos. Addi tionally, the Commission also hoped to attract American capital and enterprise by displaying the products of its fertile lands and the abundant undeveloped mineral and timber resources. This essay will investigate the imperialist motivation behind and methods used in depicting the Filipinos as savages in need of civilization. It will also analyze the fair as a means to promote American investment the Philippinesââ¬â¢ natural resources. The Spanish-American War The motives behind the conception of the 1904 exhibition are rooted in the United Statesââ¬â¢ diplomacy around and during the Spanish-American War in 1898. In the preceding decade, the United States continually attempted to exert its influence over Spanish-controlled Cuba. Although Spain had political control over Cuba, the United States had long been interested in annexing Cuba. This interest was initially sparked by commerce. By 1820, trade between the U.S. and Cuba had become so prevalent that many American politicians expected Cuba to become a part of the Union or an appendage to it. However, the rise of Cuban nationalism became an obstacle, as in 1898, Cuban revolutionaries began a three-year revolt against the Spanish colonial government. This threatened the United Statesââ¬â¢ economic ties with Cuba. In

Possessing too much or too little looks, money, and position created situations bringing about the characters problems (Hall 6:167). In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby must overcome these factors in order to move on in life. As Marius Bewley believed, the American Dream, included wealth add happiness, and this was almost always a subject matter for Fitzgerald. Scott Fitzgeralds novels have been based on a concept of class (Bloom 23). He knew that money played a tremendous role in all areas of life, and he b elieves happiness cannot exist without money. Bewley, citing Fitzgeralds recognition that money burs the happiness of wealth, calls Fitzgerald the first American writer to discover that such a thing as American class really existed (24). Loyalty To Family In The Short Story barn Burning Essay Example For Students
Loyalty To Family In The Short Story barn Burning Essay Loyalty To Family In The Short Story barn Burning The short story Barn Burning by William Faulkner is a stark look at the struggle of a boy to try to do what is right, or do what is best for his family during the post Civil War era. The main character, Sartoris Snopes is a poor son of a migrant tenant farmer who, in the opening scene is being questioned about the burning of a farmers barn by his father, Abner Snopes. The boy is torn between choosing what is right, telling the truth, or lying to protect his father. The boy is not forced to tell to judge about his father burning the barn, but is certain he would have told if asked. The father is a soldier from the Civil War and has knack for burning down the barns of those who cross his path. Faulkner uses the symbol of blood to illustrate the theme of loyalty to the family. Faulkner illustrates the theme of blood when he is to testify, and is pressured by his father to lie. In the makeshift courtroom, when the boy is put on the stand he is pressured because he knows that his father will do something rash if his son tells the truth. He also is told that some things are more important than the truth, that family is the most important thing. When Abner states, You would have told them. This shows how the boy feels toward his blood father, and how even though it would have been a lie he should have testified in his fathers favor. This scene also reveals how the father feels about family. The father believes that family should always bail out family. When the boy is thinking about the old grief of blood he means that his father has done this before and that he has lied for his father before. This theme is carried further when the boy thinks, our enemy, Ourn! Mine and hisn both! Hes my father. The boy thinking this would show that not only has he done this before but the boy is used to dealing with it. Faulkner illustrates the theme of blood when the father explains that the family must stick together. In the scenes following the courthouse, as the boy and his father talk about the incident, Abner states, You got to learn to stick to your own blood or you aint going to have any blood to stick to you.. The father says this almost as if he were trying to convince the boy rather than explain it to him. Even though he resents his father for all of the things that he does to people, he still sticks up for him. In the scene when Abner is confronted about the rug he has just soiled, his son tries to redeem him by saying, You done the best you could!, If he wanted hit done different why didnt he wait and tell you how?. This shows that the boy has some respect for his blood, and that even though he is against his fathers decisions, he still supports them because he is family. Faulkner illustrates the theme of blood when the boy infers that his blood again will be the cause of his problems. The boy is again is tried by his fathers actions, and he hopes that his father will quit his ways. The boys hope is shown when he states, Maybe it will all add up and balance and vanish-corn, rug, fire; the terror and grief, the being pulled two ways like between two teams of horses-gone, done with forever and ever.. As the father is again being questioned by a magistrate he is now backed up by his son as he states, He aint done it! He aint burnt(the rug). He does this out of protection for himself and for protection for his father. August Wilson's Fences EssayCategory: English

Jimmy Essays - English-language Films, Jimmy King, Fiction
Jimmy Jimmy lay flat on the ground, his belly pressed tightly to the earth. Green shrubs sheltered him from view. Only one hundred yards of cleared land sat between him and his objective. He had waited five years for this. It so happened that it was five years ago from today that it had happened. The nightmare that had taken place that evening was again playing in his mind. The sound of the first shot echoed through his head. The scream as his mother fell. The futile, retaliatory shots from his father . . . That evening had resulted in the death of both of his parents. He couldn't help but think that, in some way, it was his fault. If only he hadn't left his parents alone. If only he hadn't gone to explore the woods. If only he'd thought to bring a gun with him. If only he hadn't just stood there watching from the protection of the trees as those lethal bullets found their way into his parents. Then, maybe then, things would have been different. Jimmy couldn't really blame himself. After all, what could a fifteen year old boy be expected to do under those circumstances? His parents had dreamed of a better life. A life that would bring prosperity and success for the family, specifically for him. They had heard there was rich, fertile land out west. Sadly enough, his parents' last breaths were drawn only a few hundred miles from their dream. They had been murdered for nothing more than the few dollars and a couple of small pieces of jewelry that they had possessed. The murderers had laughed as they kicked at his dead father, looking for anything of value. They had been quite sure of themselves and wore no masks. Jimmy could still remember their faces as if it was yesterday. The murderers would be brought to justice, come hell or high water, Jimmy had decided. As it turned out, he was complied to track them for the past five years, through both hell and high water. Their trail had led through many obscure, sparsely populated western towns. It had not been easy. But Jimmy had always looked older than he was. Even at fifteen, he had been able to get rooms at hotels and bars. Now, at twenty years of age, Jimmy was a hardened man. Life on the road had been rough. It had taught him definite proficiency with his revolver and not to be afraid to use it. He had been through it all now, gunslingers, murderers, drunks, prostitutes, you name it, he'd been there. The stress showed on his face though his tangled beard concealed most of it. The only clothes that he owned, he wore. They consisted quite simply of a pair of jeans, a plaid shirt, a black belt and a Stetson. Other than his horse and his highly polished revolvers and his rifle, these were his sole possessions. A shadow stirred in the window and Jimmy forced the memories into the back of his mind. His parents' death would soon be avenged. There were only several hours until complete darkness would conceal his approach. Jimmy began to plan his invasion. Drunken voices were raised in the cabin. "Good," thought Jimmy, "They should be intoxicated enough that they'll never know what hit them." With this for assurance, Jimmy closed his eyes slowly and rested, anticipating the night's conclusion. The sound of a plate breaking and the sounds of knuckles meeting flesh woke Jimmy with a start. A quick surveillance of the property assured Jimmy that nothing special was happening. He had often seen two best friends fight when they were drunk. Liquor had that effect on people. It made them do crazy things. That was essentially why he tried to stay away from the stuff. He was wished that he'd brought some along tonight though. Just then he was getting a little queasy about the whole affair. During the past five years there had never been any doubt what he had to do. Now . . . "There is no question of what I have to do," Jimmy convinced himself. It was time. The only light source in the area was that coming from the lamp on the table in the cabin. His revolver slid out of its holster silently. Jimmy crept up to the door, staying carefully to the shadows. One deep breath of conviction and a swift, strong kick knocked the door off its hinges. He tensed, ready

Organizations That Certify Productive Forests
Organizations That Certify Productive Forests The words sustainable forest or sustained yield comes to us from foresters of the 18th and 19th century in Europe. At the time, much of Europe was being deforested, and foresters became increasingly concerned since wood was one of the driving forces in the European economy. Wood used for heat became necessary to build homes and factories. Wood then was turned into furniture and other articles of manufacture and the forests that provided the wood were central to economic security. The idea of sustainability became popular and the idea was brought to the United States to be popularized by foresters including Fernow, Pinchot and Schenck. Modern efforts to define sustainable development and sustainable forest management have met with confusion and argument. A debate over criteria and indicators to be used to measure forest sustainability is at the heart of the issue. Any attempt to define sustainability in a sentence, or a paragraph, or even several pages can be limiting. I think you will see the complexity of the issue if you study the content and links provided here. Doug MacCleery, forest expert with the United States Forest Service, concedes that forest sustainability issues are very complicated and very much depends on agenda. MacCleery says, To define sustainability in the abstract is likely to be nigh on to impossible...before one can define it, one must ask, sustainability: for whom and for what? One of the best definitions Ive found comes from the British Columbia Forest Service - Sustainability: A state or process that can be maintained indefinitely. The principles of sustainability integrate three closely interlined elements-the environment, the economy and the social system-into a system that can be maintained in a healthy state indefinitely. Forest certification is based on the principle of sustainability and in the authority of the certificate to back up a chain of custody scheme. There have to be documented actions, demanded by each certification scheme, assuring a sustained and healthy forest in perpetuity. A worldwide leader in the certification effort is the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) who has developed widely accepted sustainable forest schemes or principles. FSC is a certification system that provides internationally recognized standard-setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services to companies, organizations, and communities interested in responsible forestry. The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) has made worldwide strides in the certification of smaller non-industrial forest ownerships.PEFC promotes itself as the worlds largest forest certification system...remains the certification system of choice for small, non-industrial private forests, with hundreds of thousands of family forest owners certified to comply with our internationally recognized Sustainability Benchmark. Another forest certification organization, called Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI), was developed by the American Forest and Paper Association (AFPA) and represents a North American industrial developed attempt to deal with forest sustainability. SFI presents an alternative approach that may be a bit more realistic for North American forests. The organization is no longer affiliated with AFPA. SFIs collection of sustainable forestry principles were developed to achieve a much broader practice of sustainable forestry throughout the United States without higher cost to the consumer. SFI suggests that sustainable forestry is a dynamic concept that will evolve with experience. New knowledge provided through research will be used in the evolution of United States industrial forestry practices. Having a Sustainable Forestry Initiativeà ® (SFIà ®) label on wood products suggests that their forest certification process assures consumers that they are buying wood and paper products from a responsible source, backed by a rigorous, third-party certification audit.

No cellphones in class Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
No cellphones in class - Essay Example All schools have given teachers to own and use cell phones to school. However, students owning such gadgets in school are still a contentious issue faced with mixed reactions. The first advantage of students carrying their cell phones to school is for security and safety measure. The students can react to emergencies faster and efficiently by contacting relevant rescue teams. In addition, mobile phones that are internet enabled are essential to students when seeking information related to academic contents. Cell phones, therefore, are a good technology to incorporate in the learning because they enhance research and education. Cell phones are also advantageous to learners in the classroom because they find an opportunity to interact with friends, families and other acquaintances through platforms that promote information sharing (Brady 45). That can be useful only when students use phones outside the classroom context. In addition, cell phones also have both print and non-print media that are useful in enhancing learning. Particularly those that have videos and cameras are essential when learning requires realia and images. Such gadgets, therefore, enhance learning. Mobile phones are distracters during learning sessions. Most students participate in anti-learning activities with their cell phones during the learning process. Some students misuse their cell phones by watching censored materials and videos from the internet. Others students send instant texts, listen to music and illegal videos that draw attention from learning activities. Cell phones that have calculators installed make students lazy because they tend to use such machines to solve even simpler mathematical problems. Consequently, learners become dependent by using machines to solve most of their problems. Although the gadgets were regarded as a luxury possessed by adults, it is presently in the hands of school-going children.

Global Warming Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Global Warming - Research Paper Example This decision is fundamentally based upon the assumption that if humans are legally bound to control CO2 emissions, global warming can be reduced. However, scientists vary in their views regarding the existence of global warming as a problem. Many do not attribute this problem to humans. Governmentââ¬â¢s resolution to finalize such a treaty is being criticized in that if its enforcement is delayed up to some 25 years, it would hardly do anything to lower the temperature after 100 years. In this way, the proposed restrictions of the treaty would do more of economic harm than environmental good. A better idea is to postpone any legal action unless human activity is proved to be the fundamental cause of global warming. Meanwhile, better technology should be developed in order to mitigate the issue of global warming so that both environment and economy remain in good health. Biblebelievers.org.au (n.d.) has discussed certain myths that contradict the beliefs of many. They are discusse d as follows: Myth 1 ââ¬â scientists mutually consent upon warming up of Earth. According to the ground-level temperature measurements, since 1850, temperature of Earth has only increased from 0.3C to 0.6C. There is no evidence of global warming in the global satellite data of the past 18 years. Thus, saying that the globe is warming up is a myth. Myth 2 ââ¬â Humans are making the globe warm. ... Scientistsââ¬â¢ view on global warming (biblebelievers.org.au, n.d.). Myth 3 ââ¬â If necessary action is not taken in time, this can be very deleterious for the environment. Immediate government action is required before it gets too late. Proponents of the theory of global warming consented in a 1995 analysis that action to safeguard the environment against global warming can be delayed for at least 25 years without causing any harm to the environment. Governments can cut emissions to approximately 9 billion tons per year now, or wait until 2020 and cut emissions by 12 billion tons per year. Either scenario would result in the desired CO2 concentration of 550 parts per million. Delaying action until 2020 would yield an insignificant temperature rise of 0.2 degrees Celsius by 2100. (biblebelievers.org.au, n.d.). Myth 4 ââ¬â Global warming caused by humans will create dreadful environmental issues. Such beliefs have been totally rejected by many reputable scientists, particu larly those who researched upon the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the UN organization. ââ¬Å"There is no actual evidence that carbon dioxide emissions are causing global warming. Note that computer models are just concatenations of calculations you could do on a hand-held calculator, so they are theoretical and cannot be part of any evidenceâ⬠(David Evans cited in Cook, 2011). International energy statistics are available that tabulate the peat, coal, crude oil and brown coal production for every country starting from 1751. An in-depth analysis of the statistics suggests that the emission of CO2 has increased manifolds in the last century. According to EIA (cited in Cook, 2011), up to 29 billion tonnes of CO2 were released in the year 2006. The level

Future events Essay Example for Free
Future events Essay Richard here talks of a forthcoming golden era full of glory and hope. Whilst speaking in public, Richard uses this opportunity to defend him from being accused in future events. By praising the running of the country nobody would suspect him of becoming a family murderer. Again, in private Richard reveals his true feelings and again reveals to the audience future plots.Ã I am determined to prove a villain and hate the idle pleasures of these days. Plots I have laid, inductions dangerous. (Act 1 scene 1.Lines 30 +32) When speaking concealed away from the public, Richard provides insight into future events. Although it may appear that the war is over the royal family is about to confront another battle in the eyes of Richard. It is through what is said in private that Richard sheds light on future plots and events and to an extent he draws a relationship with the audience because of this.Ã The final area in which I will explore appearance and reality will be through the manipulation of religion. Richard of Gloucester is not the only character in the play to use appearance and reality as his two partners in crime prove. Catesby and Buckingham use religion as a weapon of disguising for Richards true personality and intentions. He is within, with two right reverend fathers, divinely bent to meditation .. To draw him from his holy exercise. (Act 3 scene 7.Line 60 + 61)Ã Buckingham endeavors to make Richard appear holy and innocent by portraying him as a devout, holy and religious man. By this point in the play we know that Richards life is not based on serving god but rather serving his own desires. His allies continue to do their utmost to mask his evil traits in front of the politicians.Ã This prince is not an Edward. He is not lulling on a lewd love-bed, but on his knees at meditation.(Act 3 scene 7.Line 70-71) Again, religion is manipulated to give a false identification of Richard. Their aim is to get Richard to become king and attain ruler ship thinking that they may get something in return. Buckinghams language reveals that he; Catesby and Richard are play acting.Ã Two props of virtue for a Christian prince .. and see a book of prayer in his hand. (Act 3 scene 7.Line 95+96)Ã Buckingham makes it apparent that this is a play within a play and uses the church and the word of god as a prop to make Richard look convincing on stage. Richard also does his part in covering up his true personality. I do beseech your grace to pardon me, who, earnest in the service of my god. (Line 104-105)Ã Richard once again stresses how devoted he is to god when really he is only devoted to getting himself raised to a godly figure in the form of king. Shakespeare reveals yet another plane to Richards ever- changing character through the manipulation of religion as we not only see a deceitful interpretator, a cold-blooded murderer but also a manipulative man. He has no regard for family, women or even god and this manifests the extent that he is willing to go to get what he wants. Shakespeare provides us with another peek into future events through the manipulation of Richard. Come, let us to our holy work again.(Act 3 scene 7.Line 245)Ã This holy work will in fact not be holy but will rather entail unholy and irreligious dealings. The work will contain further plotting and this braces the audience for further manipulation. This device measures the extent to which Richard will go to change his character. It also reveals that Richard isnt the only character that utilizes appearance and reality in the play and this reflects the amount of manipulation contained within the play. Appearance and reality is a device that Shakespeare cleverly uses to keep the character Richard of Gloucester running throughout the play. It revitalizes his character and interest in him is always stimulated because of this. To an extent, Richard uses appearance and reality as a stepping stool for further dealings in the future. Richard, the anti-hero, uses his physical appearance as a driving force for evil traits and deceive4s others into thinking that it makes him weaker. His contrasting treatment of women perfectly illustrates how well he can adjust roles when required. He is the master of deception as his opening soliloquy proves. It is what is said in private that reveals to the audience what Richards true intentions are and it is what is said in public that reflect lies. Shakespeare makes this link early on so that Richards changing wont fool the audience. Shakespeare mirrors appearance and reality through the manipulation of religion to show the extent that Richard will go to obtain what he requires. Appearance and reality is important because it shows that Richard is a character of dual interpretations and Shakespeare makes sure Richard uses it continually so that his character continues to fuel interest for the audience. Appearance and reality is a vital tool in the play as it not only plays a huge part in shaping events in the play but it also reveals future events that are to take place.

World History: How Can a Discipline Remain Relevant? Essay -- World Hi
ââ¬Å"Historians are a contentious lot. While their arguments are usually conducted in polite language, the disputations are conducted on a number of fronts at once, and the frame of mind of the disputants ranges from a sporting pleasure with making point after point to a savage determination to win the day.â⬠Although a sense of negativity creeps into this notion of Manningââ¬â¢s, a strengthening of world history can also emerge from this back and forth debate. Masters of Satire: John Dryden and Jonathan Swift Essay
ââ¬Å"Both Swift and Dryden are masters of satire. Usually the satire is directed against an opponent/enemy or a political process. Using references from one poem from each writer, discuss how and why each uses satire and wit as a cutting sword.â⬠John Dryden and Jonathan Swift became remarkable satirists through their ability to cleverly entwine political innuendos into their writings. There were mountains of governmental and religious issues occurring in the era of Dryden and Swift and these two witty men penned their standings into poetry and tales of adventure. Drydenââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Absalom and Achitophelâ⬠is laced with his outlooks on Englandââ¬â¢s situations. He uses numerous moments of humor to make fun of the religious situation between the Catholics and the Protestants and also the political drama after the death of King Charles. His descriptions of the similarities between Englandââ¬â¢s issues and the many parallels to biblical problems are uncanny. Lines 433 through 438 are just on example of the satire Dryden weaved into his poem. ââ¬Å"Would David have you thought his darling son? What means he then, to alienate the crown? The name of godly he may blush to bear: ââ¬ËTis after Godââ¬â¢s own heart to cheat his heir. He to his brother gives supreme command To you a legacy of barren landâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (890) Dryden was exposing the hypocrisy of King Charles who claimed to be a pious man, yet he shunned his own son. In ââ¬Å"A Description of a City Showerâ⬠, Swift incorporated hints of political and class struggles in England. As I read this poem, I got the feeling that Swift was implying that, when national tragedy strikes (when it rains), no matter what class of citizen you are or political party you belong to, youà have the same reaction as everyone else. The King on down to the poorest peasant shares the need to survive. ââ¬Å"Here various kinds, by various fortunes led, Commence acquaintance underneath a shed.â⬠(968) I may have been off on what the author really wanted to express, but that is how I felt and I could not help but think of 9/11 and how the United States came together. Democrats, Republicans, Liberals, and every other political party came together under tragedy. This poem made me see the bond of nationality all over again.

Who is Nathaniel Hawthorne - 953 Words
ââ¬Å"Let men tremble to win the hand of a woman, unless they win along with it the utmost passion of her heartâ⬠is one of my favorite quotes that Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote from the Scarlet Letter. Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American writer, that wrote fictional stories. He was a gifted writer that was influenced to use his gift by a well known man, with the name of Ralph Waldo Emerson. I believe Nathaniel had an talent to make stories rhyme with detail, that sets the scene in your very, own mind. Hawthorne had a interesting life, he enjoyed writing short stories, like Twice-Told Talesâ⬠(that he had wrote in 1837), and reading. Nathaniel also had a secret that people then didnt know, but people now these days do. He gave a ceremony about sins that people hide in their hearts, he did a funeral and a wedding, all while wearing the black veil, which made the people in the church upset that he would present himself like this. Everybody in town talks about it, but no one dared to ask why he did it, except his fiance. He told her ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a sign of his sorrows and he will not remove itâ⬠. The vail has caused many people of all age to be scared of him. Some feel as if their behind a veil with him as well, but others dont, just like how some of the dying sinners call out for him personally, and some dont. Mr.Hoppers fiancee broke off the engagem ent, but she still kept up with the happenings of him. Reverend became deathly ill. But even at his death bed he still refuses to remove the veil. He simply tells the crowd that they have avoided him and shown him no pity, just because he wore the black veil. He called them hypocrites even though they all wear black veils and shield their eyes from god to, just not physically. Mr.Hooper eventually dies, but is buried still wearing the black veil. The story he wrote was very interesting and also had a meaning to it. The meaning of the story is to recognise your sins and own up to them, instead of hiding behind them.Show MoreRelatedNathaniel Hawthorne and His Projected Self in the Scarlett Letter970 Words à |à 4 PagesNathaniel Hawthorne Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the most influential authors during the Romanticism time period. Time Management and Learning Styles Essay - 1146 Words
Time Management and Learning Styles In a society where life seems to be a race against time for many, time is precious. Going to nursing school has allowed me to explore the nurseââ¬â¢s role. Consequently, I think of time management more than ever. There is no doubt that managing time wisely is fundamental when caring for multiple patients. However, efficient time distribution is important in all aspects. As a married, full-time college student who works part-time, I know that taking care of school, job, family, and housework as well as getting appropriate rest, nutrition, and having some leisure time seems too much to fit in 24 hours. The challenges of online learning are what intrigue me the most. I was aware of how, with this system, feedback is not immediate and the interaction among professor and students varies. In contrast, I was unaware of the extent of these and other challenges. Whitehead (2006) stated that online learning lacks ââ¬Å"camaraderie that may help boost enthusiasm and motivationâ⬠as well as it ââ¬Å"may lead to a feeling of isolation.â⬠In addition, he explained how having that much flexibility may lead to procrastination in some instances, computers or storage hard drives may break down, and in online learning, there is no oral communication (Whitehead, 2006). Mallen and Adams (2017) mentioned that evaluation of profits and break even sales directly allows organisation to gauge into the benefits that that could be provided from a particular project. Maximum of 540 citizens will be accommodated in the Christmas party, which might produce total revenue of 81,020 with a net profit of 16,920. The estimation is mainly based on the overall expenses and relevant pricing of the servi ces and foods that will be solved in the Christmas party. Mentioning the pricing of the event including different pricing strategies: Particulars Unit price Exclusive use 12 Restaurant 89 Wine cellar 40 Salon Prive 82 DJ 75 The above table mainly depicts the overall prices of different services that will be provided in the Christmas party. Masterman (2014)stated that use of adequate pricing strategy allows the organisation to generate the required level of profits by maintaining relevant demand among customers. The overall pricing strategy is mainly depicting relevant prices according to the services provided in the Christmas party. The high level of pricing strategy would eventually reduce the overall income that could be generated from the event. Therefore, mediocre pricing strategy is used where not more than 540 customers could be entertained on that single day. Hence, keeping the pricing strategy at with mediocre level could eventually help in attracting high standard citizens, which will provide adequate revenue for the event management c ompany. Recommending the most appropriate source of finance, relevant income streams and pricing strategies: From the evaluation of all the above measures relevant measures that will be needed for completing the Christmas party are adequately identified. Therefore, the overall source of finance that will be needed in the Christmas party is from retained income and short term loans. use of retained income and short term loan could eventually help the event organising company to minimise the finance cost. Furthermore, this would eventually help in increasing the revenue generated from the Christmas event. The income stream is also depicted in the above tables where relevant sales from DJ party, wine cellar visit, restaurant and Salon Prive will be conducted to generate the required level of revenue from the event. Lastly, the mediocre pricing strategy adopted by the event management company could eventually help in attracting high class customers, who could bear the selling prices of the service and food. Hence, the use of above measures could eventually help the event management company to s moothly conduct its operations and successfully complete the Christmas event. Staying Healthy and Eating Right Essay Example For Students
Staying Healthy and Eating Right Essay Staying Healthy and Eating Right Essay is a lifestyle that many people should consider. A juicy hamburger from McDonalds dripping with special sauce topped with cheese is not exactly considered a healthy meal. Our society today is busy and on the go at all times. It is so much easier to stop and get fast food and then continue on. However, we should stop and think; is it really worth it to not eat right and exercise? Studies have shown, people that eat right and exercise live longer. Eating fattening foods clogs your heart with cholesterol and fat. People that do not exercise and continue to eat unhealthy foods will slow their metabolism. This is why over 70% of our society are overweight today. My grandfather has had problems with his heart in the past mostly because he was very overweight and eating the wrong foods. The doctor advised him to exercise and eat right. Now, after two years of following this advice, his heart is stronger than ever. We will write a custom essay on Staying Healthy and Eating Right specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The doctor informed him that at least ten years has been added to his life. Exercising and eating right really does help you to live longer. Eating healthy foods and exercising also helps to build persons self-esteem. Many people who are overweight do not feel good about themselves. They want to be thinner but instead of doing it the right way, they try crash diets that seem to always fail or do nothing at all about their condition. If we would exercise at least 45 minutes per day, 3 to 4 times per week, it is guaranteed that we lose weight and get in shape. When a person is at the size and stature that they would like to be then their self-esteem rises. If one has a good attitude and think they look great then more than likely other people will also. When one exercises and eats good foods then they also physically feel great. The fact that one has just spent an hour on the treadmill and a salad was for dinner makes a person feel as if they are really accomplishing something. If people would realize what a great feeling a person gets from working out and eating healthy foods then everyone would be doing it. It is a lifestyle that people should adopt and live by. It should also make one feel good that they are doing something to better themselves. All of us have areas that we can improve on. By improving our physical imperfections it makes us feel great. Some people were raised to eat everything on their plate whether it was healthy or not. If your mom made the food, then it was eaten. What our generation should do is learn from our parents mistakes. We should start cooking our children healthier foods so that they will grow up knowing and living healthier lifestyles. Others say that there is just not enough time to exercise or that fat free foods dont taste as good as fattening foods. However, we should make the time to exercise so that we can improve our mental and physical state. Also, there are now even fat free potato chips on the market that taste exactly the same as regular potato chips. Some people say that problems make them eat more, but we should practice more self-control during times that we are having problems. There are also the people that say they are not able to exercise because of physical problems, however, they are still able to eat healthy foods. In fact, people that do suffer from physical ailments and are not able to exercise should be that much more interested in learning to eat healthy. These excuses for choosing to live unhealthy in my opinion are just that; excuses! It is now time to make our choice. A healthy lifestyle and learning to exercise will benefit each one of us. Will we continue to live as unhealthy blobs, or will we take a little time out of our busy schedules so that we can live longer, raise our self-esteem, and feel great? Make a choice! .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e , .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e .postImageUrl , .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e , .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e:hover , .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e:visited , .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e:active { border:0!important; } .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e:active , .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4075c3bec2b049fa49b9de439e02102e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Biology - Genetics The Cystic Fibrosis Gene Introd EssayBibliography: .

Rabbit Proof Fence essays
Rabbit Proof Fence essays Phillip Noyces Rabbit Proof Fence expresses many of the values and attitudes regarding respect and dignity. This is clearly shown by the unjust policy enforced by the government during the 1930s with the mistreatment of the aboriginal people. Using the Molly, Daisy and Gracie, and their tale, Noyce creates a story that explores and contrasts issues such as the aborigines relationship with the land with the enormous achievement of returning home, the spiritual bond within the family and the injustice of the children removal. Rabbit Proof Fence, in many ways, represents lifes ups and downs, and how some things are unfair. In this case, Mollys journey home to Jigalong represents her stand against what we now call racial prejudice. The injustice is clearly shown when the girls are taken from their mother and driven away in a police car with their depressed and upset faces pressed up against the window of the car. Though the government, under the control of A.O Neville, had good intentions, it is evident that times had never been worse for the aboriginal people. The depression and heartache of being separated from their family is apparent among the children at the Moore River settlement. The injustice and prejudice experienced by all the aboriginal people would later have a great effect on the family kinship. Throughout Noyces film Rabbit Proof Fence, spirituality and family kinship are major themes that are continually offered. The film begins with Molly and her mother gazing at a spirit bird and Maud says: ...it will always look after you... By using this quote early in the film, Phillip Noyce tells the audience that family kinship is very important in the aboriginal community and that this theme will may be further developed in the film. After being stolen from their community and put in the Moore River settlement, Molly and the girls escape and ...
